Synopsis

Setting: A historic family home in Houston during Juneteenth celebrations, with journeys into the family's past reaching back to Emancipation in 1865.

Following the death of her beloved grandmother Rose, Dr. Olivia Walker returns to Houston intending to sell the family home and put the past behind her. Once the site of a hospital founded by her ancestors to serve the Black community after emancipation, the house has long stood as a monument to family achievement, memory, and perseverance. Olivia, however, has little interest in preserving what she sees as an uncomfortable inheritance.

As she sorts through family belongings, Olivia reconnects with her former boyfriend, Dr. Ellis Davidson, and encounters community leaders determined to honor her family's role in local history. A journal and photograph discovered among Rose's keepsakes awaken long-buried questions about identity, belonging, and purpose. When Olivia falls asleep, she is transported into the world of her ancestors, witnessing the first Juneteenth and encountering family members whose sacrifices laid the foundation for generations to come.

Throughout the opera, a chorus of ancestors inhabits the house, offering memories, humor, wisdom, and guidance as past and present intertwine. Their voices reveal a family history rooted in service, resilience, and love, challenging Olivia to see herself as part of a larger story. 
 
In this uplifting choral opera, history becomes a living presence as one woman discovers that the path forward sometimes begins by finding her way home.
