Nkeiru Okoye is a Latin Grammy–nominated, Guggenheim Fellow, and American Prize–winning composer, librettist, conductor, and cultural thought leader. Praised by The New York Times for Black Bottom as “one of the most engrossing musical portraits of Black history in the available repertoire,” her music is celebrated for its dramatic power, expressive clarity, and richly narrative voice.
Her works have been commissioned and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Royal Opera House, Carnegie Hall, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, at Tanglewood, Houston Grand Opera, Juilliard, and Opera North UK. Signature works include Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom and its widely performed song cycle Songs of Harriet Tubman; When the Caged Bird Sings; We Met at the Symphony (winner of The American Prize in Vocal Chamber Music); and Voices Shouting Out, a staple of the repertoire conducted by Gustavo Dudamel among many others.
Upcoming projects include a piano suite for Orli Shaham, Dance ’Til You Drop for David Greilsammer, Dear Olly for Opera North UK, A Time for Jubilee (commissioned by the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra), and a to-be-announced America 250 commission. Her debut NAXOS CD is forthcoming.

With three major premieres and an orchestral residency, Okoye continues to expand the boundaries of contemporary classical storytelling. At the heart of the season is her residency with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, which features the landmark oratorio A Time for Jubilee. Set against the backdrop of the historic Selma to Montgomery Trail, the work unites soprano Laquita Mitchell, a mass choir of local college choruses, and conductor Jamie Reeves in a powerful musical reflection on unity, protest, and hope. Following its Montgomery premiere in February 2026, A Time for Jubilee will tour to orchestras across Alabama. As part of the residency, the Montgomery Symphony will also present We Met at the Symphony: An Evening with Nkeiru Okoye, a concert of her comic vocal and chamber works.
